X In Nomine Iesu Christi X     THE INVOCATION Pastor:       In the name of the Father and of the X Son and of the Holy Spirit. People:      Amen.   THE CONFESSION OF SINS Pastor:       If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. People:      But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.   (silence for meditation and self-examination)   Pastor:       Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. People:      Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean.  We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone.  We have not loved with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.  We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment.  For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.  Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name.  Amen.   THE DECLARATION OF GRACE Pastor:       In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins.  To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit.  May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. People:      Amen.   THE PSALM                                                                                  Psalm 23 (ESV) Pastor:       The Lord is my Shepherd;                    I shall not want. People:      He makes me lie down in green pastures.                    He leads me beside still waters. Pastor:       He restores my soul.                    He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. People:      Even though I walk through the valley                    of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil,                    for You are with me;                    Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. Pastor:       You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;                    You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. People:      Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me                    all the days of my life,                    and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.   All:   Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;           as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen.   THE SALUTATION Pastor:       The Lord be with you. People:      And also with you.   THE COLLECT OF THE DAY Pastor:       Let us pray.                    Almighty God, merciful Father, since You have wakened from death the Shepherd of Your sheep, grant us Your Holy Spirit that when we hear the voice of our Shepherd we may know Him who calls us each by name and follow where He leads; through the same Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. People:      Amen.   THE FIRST READING                                                           Acts 2:42-47 (ESV) They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.  And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles.  And all who believed were together and had all things in common.  And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.  And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people.  And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.   THE EPISTLE                                                                       1 Peter 2:19-25 (ESV) This is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly.  For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure?  But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God.  For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in His steps.  He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in His mouth.  When He was reviled, He did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but continued entrusting Himself to Him who judges justly.  He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.  By His wounds you have been healed.  For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.   THE HOLY GOSPEL                                                              John 10:1-10 (ESV) [Jesus said:]  “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the Door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber.  But he who enters by the Door is the shepherd of the sheep.  To him the gatekeeper opens.  The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.  When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.  A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”  This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what He was saying to them.  So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the Door of the sheep.  All who came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.  I am the Door.  If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.  The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.  I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”   THE CHILDREN'S SERMON   THE HYMN                                                              (Lutheran Service Book #710) All:   The Lord’s my Shepherd, I’ll not want;           He makes me down to lie           In pastures green; He leadeth me           The quiet waters by.             My soul He doth restore again           And me to walk doth make           Within the paths of righteousness,           E’en for His own name’s sake.               Yea, though I walk in death’s dark vale,           Yet will I fear no ill;           For Thou art with me, and Thy rod           And staff me comfort still.             My table Thou hast furnished           In presence of my foes;           My head Thou dost with oil anoint,           And my cup overflows.             Goodness and mercy all my life           Shall surely follow me;           And in God’s house forevermore           My dwelling place shall be.   THE SERMON                                                      “Never in Need” (Psalm 23:1)   THE APOSTLES’ CREED All:   I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.             And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,           who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary,           suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.           He descended into hell.           The third day He rose again from the dead.           He ascended into heaven           and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.           From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.             I believe in the Holy Spirit.           The holy Christian Church, the communion of saints,           the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,           and the life X everlasting.  Amen.   THE PRAYER OF THE CHURCH (after each petition:) Pastor:       Lord, in Your mercy, People:      hear our prayer. (at the end:) People:      Amen.   THE LORD’S PRAYER All:   Our Father who art in heaven,           Hallowed be Thy name.           Thy kingdom come.           Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.           Give us this day our daily bread.           And forgive us our trespasses                    as we forgive those who trespass against us           And lead us not into temptation.           But deliver us from evil.           For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory                    forever and ever.  Amen.   THE BENEDICTION Pastor:       The Lord bless you and keep you.                    The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you.                    The Lord look upon you with favor and give you X peace. People:      Amen.     X       X       X     ~
